Prayer - Feast of the Assumption
Loving Father, let us pray that we will join Mary, the mother of the Lord, in the glory of heaven. All-powerful and ever-living God, you raised the sinless Virgin Mary, mother of your Son, body and soul, to the glory of heaven. May we see heaven as our final goal and come to share her glory. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
2025 Book Week
This week, St Columba’s celebrated the joy of reading with our annual Book Week Parade. The playground came alive with colour, excitement, and creativity as students proudly dressed as their favourite book characters.
The theme for Book Week this year was “Book an Adventure”, reminding us that every story takes us on a journey filled with discovery, wonder, and excitement. Along with the parade, students enjoyed Book Week trivia and Kahoot challenges, making the day both fun and engaging.
A big congratulations and thank you to Miss Nixon and Mrs Crean for coordinating these special events. The day was a huge success. Thank you also to our parents and families for supporting the day by helping with costumes and encouraging our children to celebrate reading in such a joyful way. Events like these highlight the importance of books in our learning and remind us that every story has the power to inspire.

Curriculum Information
WHAT IS READING FLUENCY?
Fluency is reading expressively with accuracy and at a good pace. It is one of the key components of learning to read. It is the progression from developing automatic word recognition skills to comprehension.
Fluency is made up of three core components:
- Accuracy is the reading of words correctly.
- Rate is the speed of word identification. It is usually recorded as words read per minute.
- Prosody is the sound of the reading. This can be explained as the expression used when reading.
At St Columba’s, we aim to develop reading fluency from the early years. Classroom practices include daily reading in phonics lessons, reading decodable texts and sight word recognition through word lists. As students progress through the years, reading fluency is practised by reading connected text, choral reading, partner reading, reading to the teacher in reading groups, reader's theatre and individual reading aloud, to name a few.
Healthy Harold Visiting St Columba's

The Life Education Van will be visiting St Columba’s on Wednesday, 17th September (Week 9).
Life Education, with its iconic giraffe mascot, Healthy Harold, has been an integral part of our school's curriculum for many years. This program aims to empower our students with essential knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. Through interactive sessions and engaging activities, students learn about various aspects of health, including nutrition, physical activity, drug education, and social-emotional wellbeing.
One of the highlights of the Life Education program is the opportunity for students to interact with Harold himself. Harold is not just a mascot; he's a friendly and relatable character who connects with students on a personal level. His presence sparks curiosity and encourages students to ask questions, share experiences, and actively participate in discussions.
As part of Healthy Harold’s visit, students will have the opportunity to purchase items from the Life Education Shop. All money raised through the Life Education Shop goes directly back into supporting the Life Education program.
